House of Lusignan

The Lusignan family were descended from a noble family in Poitou, beginning with Hughues VIII of Lusignan; succeeded by son Hugh IX.

The Lusignans were allied to the Counts of Angouleme (12th century); allied to Richard I of England in Outremer, Cyprus and Poutou (1190s).

The lands of the Lusignan family and vassals included Couche, Vouvant, Chateau-Larcher, Frontenay and Lusignan itself (SE of Poitiers) which linked Poitiers with Saintes and La Rochelle.

One notable member of the Lusignan family was Guy de Lusignan, King of Jerusalem and Lord of Cyprus.
